Frequently Asked Questions

Ok, so you are now ready to discover the secrets to making a cornice but still have a few questions…

How much money will it cost me to make an Upholstered Wooden Cornice?

The fabric you use will fluctuate in price. For example, some of the lesser expensive prices might range from $6-12 per yard. We have also seen designer, imported or silk fabric cost as much as $200 or more.  The cost of your fabric will depend on your taste for fabric. Discount fabric stores are going to be your best bet for savings on your selected fabric.

Please note, however, that just because you spend more money on the fabric, doesn’t necessarily mean that your cornice will look better or more expensive.  We have spent a minimal amount on fabric in the past and received “rave” reviews on a cornice that cost us "peanuts" to create!  So, depending on the fabric used in combination with the size of your cornice, you could expect to spend anywhere from $40 for a 6’ wooden cornice, to $450 or more for a 7’ wooden cornice.

How much money can I expect to save by creating my own cornice?

Again, your cost is dependant on the size of your cornice along with the cost of your material.  I can tell you that I have spent as little as $40 and spent as much as $100 for the materials needed to create my upholstered wooden cornices.  The cost to make your wooden upholstered cornice is not even a “drop in the bucket’ compared to the amount that you would spend to hire a professional or if you purchased one from a store.  You could easily spend $700 or more to hire a professional to create an upholstered wooden cornice. With our step-by-step instructions on how to create your own customized upholstered wooden cornice, you will easily save $300, perhaps well over $1,000 on just one cornice, depending on the size and type of fabric used to make your wooden upholstered cornice!

I have heard something about Styrofoam cornices.  How do these differ from an upholstered wooden cornice?

Styrofoam cornices are an alternative to an upholstered wooden cornice.  While it is true that a Styrofoam cornice may be easier to make and perhaps somewhat more versatile than an upholstered wooden cornice; it is only my opinion that an upholstered wooden cornice looks much more professional.  Through many years of experience, I honestly have to say that I can usually distinguish a Styrofoam cornice from an upholstered wooden cornice.

I prefer an upholstered wooden cornice over a Styrofoam cornice because I think an upholstered wooden cornice looks much more elegant, solid and sturdy.  If you are looking for a “quick fix” and are not concerned that it is not likely going to look as professional as an upholstered wooden cornice, then I would suggest choosing a Styrofoam cornice.  If you are looking for a professional looking cornice, just like the pros’ make, and at a fraction of the cost, then an upholstered wooden cornice should be your choice.
